Day 3 ISA Press 10/12

The drama continued into heat 10 as Brazil, Hawaii, Italy and Jamaica went head to head. Jeferson Silva of powerhouse team Brazil took a solid first place with a combo two-wave score of 12.33. With less than a minute left in the heat and needing a 3.23 to advance in second, Icah Wilmot from Jamaica
took an outside set wave, made the inside section and finished off with strong backhand snap to earn a 3.63 squeezing past Italy's Giovanni Perini and Hawaii's Mason Ho who finished third and fourth respectively. "There are a lot of really good surfers here and it has been tough so far. It was hard to catch waves out there," said Wilmot. "Going into it, I figured it was going to be a hard heat but I just had to keep cool and relax."

It was an emotional win for the whole Jamaican team who has faced hefty challenges just to come to this competition from traveling expenses (which are about $30,000 USD for a one week stay) to obtaining visas. Prior to this competition, Jamaica received a grant from their government to help build the national surf team. Of the 11 surfers on the team, three of the
Boys Under 18 and three of the Boys Under 16 have been eliminated. And in an unfortunate turn of events later in the afternoon, Wilmot was knocked out USA and South Africa and forced into repercharges along with three other
Jamaican team members.

Dear Sponsors & Supporters of the Jamaica National Junior Surfing Team,

Below is a brief update from Team manager Billy Wilmot on the Junior Team's progress to date. (Also a few pics attached).

On a personal note it was a lifetime highlight for me to walk with our National Team in the "Parade of Nations" ceremony that opened the Quiksilver/ ISA World Junior Surfing Championships on Saturday afternoon! We made a highly spirited march across the main stage waving flags and cheering to the crowds loud applause and were only outdone by the New Zealand team who stripped off their shirts and performed a traditional "Haka" Mauri warrior dance! Next time we will have to bring the Nyabingy drums!!
Having spent most of the past few days with the team I must say we have an extraordinary group of young ambassadors clearly exhibiting their best behavior and the warmth, pride, and unity that embodies our national motto "Out of many one people".
They are making a great impression in and out of the water!

This is an invaluable experience for these kids and already we are seeing improvements in their surfing as they are inspired by the high level of competition to push themselves to new heights. This is Great Stuff !

On behalf of the JSA and the National Junior Team, many thanks again for your support!!
Stay tuned for more news updates throughout the next few days.

All the best!
Nigel

Subject: Jamaican Surfers Continue to Challenge.
The National Junior Surf Team is still on track with 9 surfers still in with a shot at individual titles. Main hopes hing on National Jr. Champ Icah Wilmot who posted a second place finnish in his opening heat of the first round and advanced to the second round as did national junior girls competitor Elim beckford.

Competing today will be Jamaicas top under 16 boys Ackeam Phillips and Shane Simmonds who have been working out since their arrival in California on friday. The surf has been large with bigger sets in the 1
0' range.
